David A. Jones and Wendell Cherry founded Humana on August 18, 1961, in Louisville, Kentucky. Starting as Heritage House, a nursing home, their goal was to standardize elderly care. They transitioned from nursing homes to hospitals, rebranding as Humana Inc. in 1974, then pivoted to health insurance, focusing on health plans by 1993.

Humana serves millions, primarily the aging U.S. population through Medicare Advantage programs. Its vision aims to shape this market by improving health outcomes and reducing care costs.
