DNV is an independent assurance, risk management, and classification society based in Høvik, Greater Oslo, Norway, that provides technical inspections, software solutions, and certification services across multiple industrial sectors. The organization primarily serves the maritime, oil and gas, and wind energy markets, currently classifying approximately 25% of the entire global shipping fleet. Operating as a private entity, the firm was previously known as DNV GL following a major 2013 merger with Germanischer Lloyd before officially rebranding in 2021. The enterprise is now under the 100% ownership of the foundation Stiftelsen Det Norske Veritas, chaired by Leif-Arne Langøy, after acquiring the remaining minority stake from Mayfair Vermögensverwaltung in 2017. DNV was originally founded in 1864 by a consortium of Norwegian mutual marine insurance clubs to assess ship seaworthiness and establish uniform safety standards.
