Michael Pennington is a London-based entrepreneur and angel investor currently operating as an independent backer of early-stage technology startups. He is best known as the co-founder of the online classifieds platform Gumtree, which he launched in 2000 alongside Simon Crookall. The duo expanded the business across the United Kingdom, Australia, and South Africa before facilitating its strategic acquisition by eBay in 2005. Following this exit, Pennington co-founded Slando, a localized classifieds network targeting Eastern European markets, which was subsequently acquired by the multinational conglomerate Naspers in 2011 for approximately $29 million. Since transitioning to full-time investing, he has allocated capital into dozens of digital marketplaces and consumer internet ventures across the European tech ecosystem. His current focus involves utilizing his operational background to advise founders on scaling network-effect businesses from their initial inception through to corporate acquisition.
