Michael Lin is the Co-Founder of Variance, an artificial intelligence startup focused on trust and safety solutions, and is currently based in San Francisco, California. Before establishing the company in 2022, he developed machine learning and data engineering infrastructure to combat spam, botting, and developer fraud for hundreds of millions of active users at Discord and Apple. He partnered with Karine Mellata, whom he originally met while working on Apple's fraud engineering team, to build automated tools for fraud review and content moderation. Under his leadership, Variance expanded to a 12-person operating team and secured a $3.1 million seed funding round in December 2023 backed by Y Combinator and institutional investors. Lin currently focuses on deploying advanced AI agents to help Fortune 500 companies, digital marketplaces, and regulated financial services mitigate online abuse and streamline complex identity investigations.
