STFC

The Science and Technology Facilities Council (STFC) conducts world-leading physical and computational science research. It develops advanced technologies for astronomy, particle physics, and space science, providing large-scale facilities for neutron, muon, laser, and X-ray experimentation, plus high-performance computing. STFC’s Technology Department innovates in detector, electronics, cryogenics, and accelerator technology, driving breakthroughs in quantum computing.

STFC formed in 2007 from a merger of the Council for the Central Laboratory of the Research Councils and the Particle Physics and Astronomy Research Council. This unified UK science investments, creating a cohesive framework for fundamental research and technology development. As part of UK Research and Innovation since 2018, its founding insight centered on integrated scientific infrastructure for global challenges.

The organization supports over 1,700 university academics and 900 PhD students, serving over 3,500 annual users. STFC also develops National Science and Innovation Campuses, attracting diverse businesses. Its vision is to expand understanding of the Universe and matter, translating knowledge and prowess into economic, societal, and scientific benefits.
