Develops ultra-light, flexible perovskite solar modules for built environments, integrating energy generation into surfaces.
Active Surfaces is a Woburn, Massachusetts-based hardware manufacturer that develops ultra-lightweight, flexible perovskite solar modules designed to be installed directly onto weight-constrained roofs, walls, and curved surfaces. Targeting the commercial and industrial real estate sectors, the company produces peel-and-stick thin-film solar technology that reduces installation costs by up to ten times compared to traditional rigid silicon panels. Operating from a dedicated 4,800-square-foot manufacturing facility, the early-stage startup has raised $5.6 million in an oversubscribed seed funding round and previously won the $100,000 grand prize at the MIT $100K Entrepreneurship Competition. Active Surfaces is backed by lead investor Safar Partners alongside institutional investor J-POWER, and its advisory board features prominent figures including MIT professor Vladimir Bulović and Nobel laureate Moungi Bawendi. The enterprise was officially founded in 2022 by co-founders Shiv Bhakta and Richard Swartwout.
